Overall Purpose of Job

Avison Young's retail team advises and assists clients on every aspect of retail property in a fast-moving market. Our nationwide services embrace the whole property lifecycle, from planning through to sale. We are well positioned to adapt and react to the ever-changing retail market to give timely and innovative consultation to our clients, and we have the tools and insight to accurately predict market trends.

The Avison Young retail team works predominantly in town, out of town and in the retail leisure space. Within these areas, we specialise in agency, investment, lease advisory and consultancy, offering strategic advice to clients throughout the retail property lifecycle including acquisitions, disposals. portfolio strategy, and new entry strategy.

We also play an important role advising local authorities on all aspects of their town centres and retail property whether this be new developments, town centre regeneration strategies or straightforward acquisition or disposals.

Our retail team represent a large number of multiple retailers, restaurants, and bar operators throughout the country as well as numerous financial institutions, property companies, and developers.

An opportunity has arisen for a Surveyor working within our retail team based in our Birmingham office.


Main Duties, Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Following induction and familiarisation, the applicant will have responsibility for individual jobs under the Director.
  • Working with funds, private equity, corporate occupiers, retailers, local authorities and developers.
  • Carrying out competent and accurate reports, leasing schedules and attendance at leasing meetings.
  • Dealing with applicants, arranging and attending viewings and reporting, all with a view to relieving the Director of workload and transacting deals.
  • Carrying out research and market testing for official reporting for either Public Sector or to support funding.
  • Complete rent reviews/lease renewals on an ad hoc basis.
  • Liaising with other team members to ensure we deliver the best results for our clients.
  • Provide and support the wider multi-disciplinary team in Birmingham with sound commercial knowledge, input, with good communication skills.
  • Ensure the maintenance of all job files and appropriate instruction records in accordance with the firm’s principles and procedures and all statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure the implementation of Quality Assurance, Health and Safety Environmental and all other policies and procedures of the firm.
  • Ensure continued client satisfaction.
  • Help team achieve budgeted fee income targets.


Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Soon to be qualified or newly qualified MRICS general practice surveyor.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence.
  • Good report writing skills.
  • Excellent communicator at all levels.
  • Market appraisal and strategic reporting experience.
  • Establishing reputation in the leasing market as either retail or leisure or both. Consideration may also be given to candidates from a non-retail agency background.
  • If able to bring clients/business that would be beneficial but not essential.
